Have you ever thought about what happens to your trash after it’s picked up? Or maybe you’ve wondered what water goes through before it comes out of your tap?
Participants in the 2019 Oxnard Leadership Program went behind-the-scenes for a daylong exploration of the City of Oxnard’s public services. The sixth session was coordinated with the help of Barbara Wulf, Outreach/Education Specialist from the City of Oxnard's Water Division. The morning started at the Advanced Water Purification Facility, where they learned from Wastewater Operations Manager/CPO Vince Ines how Oxnard is leading the way when it comes to water purification. The innovative facility uses one of the world’s most highly developed purification processes to produce safe and clean water from treated wastewater. He also took the group on a tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and walked them through the various phases that waste water goes through to become clean, recycled water. After having Domino’s Pizza for lunch sponsored by JaniTek Cleaning Solutions, the afternoon began with a visit to the City Maintenance Yard where they met with representatives from Parks, Special Districts, Maintenance, Facilities and Fleet Services to get a better understanding of how each division helps maintain the city’s parks and streets. During their visit to the Water Campus, Water Utility Manager Omar Castro and Water Resources Manager Nancy Broschart explained how the city analyzes water levels, and how it tracks quality and consumption. For their final visit of the day, the group toured Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station with Manager Todd Housley. Del Norte is responsible for accepting, transferring and disposing of approximately 200,000 tons of solid waste each year. They also learned about the buyback center for recyclable aluminum cans, beverage containers and glass, and the recyclable hazardous waste center for batteries, used motor oil, water-based paint, etc. Every year, the Oxnard Leadership Program leads participants through 10 unique, day-long experiences to gain a better understanding and appreciation of Oxnard and the surrounding areas’ realities, opportunities and challenges. Each session includes visits to various locations and provides participants with a unique opportunity to meet key business and government leaders who play integral roles in the region. In July, session seven will focus on Health and Human Services, with visits to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, St. John’s Food Pantry and FOOD Share. Recent threats from President Trump to impose tariffs on our neighbor and leading trade partner were not in the best interest of commerce. I, along with countless others, breathed a huge sigh of relief when Trump indefinitely postponed the 5% tariff slated to be imposed on Mexican imports June 10.
I followed research the US Chamber complied on the proposed Mexican tariffs. Assuming the lowest rate of 5%, California alone would experience a $2.2 trillion impact. Those costs would be passed on to consumers. With the price of goods escalated, sales taxes would also increase sharply. For instance, if you assume that $1 trillion of the $2.2 trillion in tariffs was on taxable goods (such as autos) and you apply a modest average sales tax rate of 8%, that would generate an additional $800 million in tax revenue paid by consumers!! Since most of us won't be getting pay increases to cover the cost of tariffs, the end result would be consumers purchasing fewer goods. Even though we have currently averted the tariffs on Mexico's goods, the trade wars with China and the EU are ongoing. The US Chamber has gathered the impact numbers for those trading "partners" as well. These numbers are projected impacts to California only, not the entire US. Total Exports to China Threatened by New Tariffs: $13,088,228,667
Total Exports to EU Threatened by New Tariffs: $383,406,339
In addition, California has 4,869,200 jobs supported by trade. The Great Recession a decade ago clearly defined our world being globally connected and intertwined. We should be supporting the prosperity of our trading partners, not trying conquer them. Ron Helus, 54, of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department was one year away from retirement after 29 years on the job, but he was the first to enter the Borderline Bar and Grill on that fateful night when 12 people lost their lives in a mass shooting last November. That was the kind of dedication Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ron Helus had, protecting others before himself. On Saturday, June 29, our community has an opportunity to show respect and appreciation for Sgt. Helus and other members of law enforcement as part of the Ride for the Blue event. If you are a motorcyclist, the Ride for the Blue event will start at the parking lot of Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, 99 Rolling Oaks Dr. Thousand Oaks, with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. The actual motorcycle ride will begin at 7:50 a.m., with a lunch break at 12:30 p.m. and the event ending at 4:00 p.m. Participants will ride their motorcycles and briefly visit each law enforcement station in Ventura County to say thank you to the officers who are protecting and serving our communities. If you would like to show your support for the Oxnard Police Department, we invite you and your family to meet in front of the Oxnard Police Department, 251 S. C Street, Oxnard. You should plan on being at the station at approximately 10:45 a.m. on June 29 to support and cheer on our dedicated law enforcement personnel and the hundreds of riders visiting our great city.
